To Sailors Thinking About Joining BYC:

Thank you for your interest in Bloomington Yacht Club on beautiful Lake Lemon.  We are a unique sailing club found to promote the wonderful sport of sailing, including sailboat racing, recreational and day sailing.  Because the club is a cooperative, members manage and maintain the club via monthly meetings on the first Saturday of each month (except December and January).  At BYC, everyone pitches in to help with club races, maintain the grounds, serve on committees, and run the annual regatta.  Co-op responsibilities generally require about four days of commitment. Believe me--we don’t let duties get in the way when the wind is blowing right.

The club conducts races on Sunday afternoons between May and October when conditions are right.  We host a number of regattas as well as a 4th of July celebration. We enjoy a pitch-in meal the first Saturday of every month prior to club meetings. We hold an annual awards banquet in November.  Members have access to the club all year and can host private parties or gatherings by reservation.  We offer a complete kitchen, lounge area, large deck, two bathrooms, a hot shower and a sail storage area. The clubhouse and restrooms are wheelchair accessible.  BYC has a hoist and a beach for launching boats plus a large dock.

If you are interested in joining the club, come on out and take a look around.  Meet the sailors! Potential members submit an application with a refundable $100 application fee. A sponsoring sailor introduces applicants to the group at a monthly meeting. If you don’t have a sponsor, the membership chair will fill the role.  At that first meeting, your application will be acknowledged by membership and then considered at the next club meeting.  Meanwhile, feel free to “hang out” and get to know everyone. Upon acceptance, you will receive keys to the clubhouse, bylaws, and a membership kit.  You will also be assigned a boat slip and storage area for your sailing gear. Your application fee will be applied to your dues.

Dues at the BYC are currently $400 per year, plus a $100 boat fee or $200 slip fee.  Fees may be paid quarterly.  In addition, new members are required to buy two shares of stock, at $50 apiece, within the first two years.

Please fill out a membership application and return it to me. We always look forward to sailing with new mates.  If you have further questions, contact me by phone or e-mail.

Happy sailing!
